Passage Two
Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it's painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.
The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes in the morning. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues as: “Get up, John! You will be late for work again!” The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when members of the family realize what they have different energy cycle.
You can't change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes. If our energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won't change your cycle, but you'll get up steam and work better at your low point.
Get off to a slow start, which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn(打哈欠) and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Passage Three
Disneyland is a great family destination, yet children are so tempted at the park by the wide choices of food and gifts that a day intended for family fun sometimes turns out to be unpleasant. While it’s a parent’s job to say “no” at appropriate time, saying no during a special day intended for family togetherness can definitely spoil the fun for both adult and child.
When our children were in early elementary school, we came up with a plan that took the “yes” and “no” spending decision out of our hands, and placed it into theirs.
We were off to Disneyland, and during previous visits our son would keep asking us to by souvenirs(纪念品) from various shops. Before going to the park, we explained that we would be giving them each their share of the money, and it would be totally their decision how to spend it. But once their portion was gone, it was gone.
It was interesting how differently our two children budgeted their portion. Our daughter spent her portion on her food and drink, and managed to buy a snack and souvenirs. Our son, who usually found something he had to have at every corner, turned into a nervous miser. At lunch time, we wouldn’t even order a soda, and when he saw something he wanted to buy, he studied it until he decided he didn’t need it.
By the end of the day, our daughter had spent her share, and seemed quite pleased with the choices he had made. Our son, who had spent very little, was suddenly frantic(狂乱的) to buy something (or anything) with his remaining cash. I felt a little sorry for him, because while we had an enjoyable day, free from the responsibility of monitoring our children’s spending, his day was spent dealing with the consequences of his choices.
46. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. The family budget                        B. Spending responsibility

B. Children themselves decide to buy whatever they want
C. Parents say “no” whenever their children ask to buy something
D. Children are given a sum of money and they decide what to buy.
48. What did the author’s son do with his own money at Disneyland?

Passage Four
The government may control prices when where is a problem such as rapidly increasing rents or a rise in the cost of living. When the government controls prices, there is no longer a normal relationship between the price of a product and the quantity consumers will buy. Government controls may help in an emergency. However, some economists believe that controls can have negative effects over a long period of time.
In cities with rent control, the city government sets the maximum rent that a landlord can charge for an apartment. Supporters of rent control argue that it protects people who are living in apartments. Their rent cannot increase; therefore, they are not in danger of losing their homes. However, the critics say that after a long time, rent control may have negative effects. Landlords know that they cannot increase their profits. Therefore, they invest in other businesses where they can increase their profits. They do not invest in new buildings which would also be rent-controlled. As a result, new apartments are not built. Many people who need apartments cannot find any. According to the critics, the end result of rent control is a shortage of apartments in the city.
Economic theory predicts the results of economic decisions such as decisions about rent control, price control and the minimum wage. The predictions may be correct only if “other things are equal”.
Economists do not agree on some of the predictions. They also do not agree on the value of different decisions. Some economists support a particular decision while others criticize it. Economists do agree, however, that there are no simple answers to economic questions. 51. According to Paragraph 1, price control       .
A. should be avoided                 B. is good in every sense
C. does more harm than good           D. is helpful but harmful in the long run

53. Which of the following do all economists agree on?
A. Economic questions are difficult to deal with.
B. The government must take measures to control rent increase.
C. Controls can have negative effects over a long period of time.
D. The maximum rent system protects those without their own houses.
54. What is the author’s opinion about price control?
A. Subjective        B. Negative       C. Objective      D. Supportive
55. The purpose of this passage is to       .
