Passage One
Within fifteen years Britain and other nations should be well on with the building of huge industrial complexes for the recycling of waste. The word rubbish could lose its meaning because everything that goes into the dumps would be made into something useful. Even the most dangerous and unpleasant wastes would provide energy if nothing else.
The latest project is to take a city of around half a million inhabitants and discover exactly what raw materials go into it and what go out. The aim is to find out how much of these raw materials could be provided if a plant for recycling waste were built just outside the city. This plant would recycle not only metal such as steel, lead and copper, but also paper and rubber as well.
Another new project is being set up to discover the best ways of sorting and separating the rubbish. When this project is complete, the rubbish will be processed like this: first, it will pass through sharp metal bars which will tear open the plastic bags in which rubbish is usually packed; then it will pass through a powerful fan to separate the lightest elements from the heavy solids; after that founders and rollers will break up everything that can be broken. Finally, and the rubbish will pass under magnets, which will remove the bits .of iron and steel; the rubber and plastic will then be sorted out in the final stage.
The first full-scale giant recycling plants are, perhaps, fifteen years away. Indeed, with the growing cost of transporting rubbish to more distant dumps, some big cities will be forced to build their own recycling plants before long.

Some even criticize that man's life has been controlled by computers.
Later, they learned to use their fingers in counting.
They have much better memories and can store large amounts of information.
How quickly people will adapt to computer-based world is uncertain.
For instance, a spaceship cannot leave the earth and go to the moon without computers.
Since its invention the computer has changed greatly, and it has more and more uses.
They can control machines in factories, work out tomorrows weather, and even do translation work.

 How did the early people do their counting? At first, they did all their counting with small stones.       36        Since man has ten fingers, the number ten became the foundation of all counting in many parts of the world.
In 1946 the first electronic computers went into operation.        37        It can free people from difficult measurement and computation;
There are complex computation in science and engineering. Scientists are unable to make them, but the computer can do them quickly and correctly.        38        What must the spaceship be like? When can it leave? Will it be on the right course? The computer must answer all these questions.
In recent years more and more people have used computers not only in production and technology, but also in everyday life, for the simple reason that they are far more efficient than man.       39       No man can do 500,000 sums in one second, but a computer cam, In fact, computers can do many of the things we do, but faster and better.       40

Currently ,there exists an increasingly serious social problem, especially in big cities, that is food waste, which has become a common concern of the public. And this phenomenon has seriously betrayed the action, Clean Plate Initiative, which has been carried out recently.
There is one thing we must be aware of. Our motherland is still a developing country ,and a number of poor areas lack sufficient food to eat .Indeed, food shortage is a severe problem that people in those areas have been suffering from and need immediate action to solve.
As far as lam concerned, as a big family, we Chinese do not have qualifications to waste food. It is high time that relevant measures should be taken to prevent the food from being thrown away and wasted. Surplus food can be donated to those areas in need. Only in this way can we live a happy, peaceful and harmonious life
